Parenting content on social media is taking a toll on Millennial parents’ mental health—and many are trying to find a good balance. We told you that Millennial parenting is being shaped by social media. For many—especially mothers—being a parent “lies somewhere between the blissful and joyless extremes you often see on the internet.” But on social media, specifically Instagram, motherhood content exists as “two extremes.” According to one expert, the two motherhood portrayals on Instagram are “alpha mom” and “realistic mom.” But the former has fallen out of favor in recent years. We told you how some Millennial parents have started posting more honest content about the frustrations of parenthood, but for some parents, seeing the content focused on the gloom and doom of parenting almost “scared [them] out of having a baby” altogether, or has taken a major toll on their mental health. Of course, while it’s important that Millennial parents have an outlet to share their problems, most parents have been “shifting toward the middle” when it comes to sharing and consuming content on social media.
