Disney+ and Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel will feature the first Muslim teen superhero. Young audiences want more superhero content with BIPOC leads, and from Shang-Chi to Eternals, Marvel Studios’ and Disney have been putting the spotlight on Asian superheroes. The companies recently debuted the trailer for the Ms. Marvel series, which will premiere in June on Disney+. The new MCU show centers on the character of Kamala Khan (portrayed by Iman Vellani), a Pakistani-American teen from Jersey City who struggles to fit in at home and at school, but loves to draw, write fan fiction, and daydream about “joining the superheroes she idolizes.” The character was first introduced in the comics in 2013, and is Marvel’s first Muslim-American superhero. While Khan eventually grows to be one of Marvel’s “most powerful crime fighters” under the guise of Ms. Marvel, the Disney+ series will serve as her origin story. (CNN)
