The unemployment rate went up for Black women in the U.S. last month. According to the Bureau Labor of Statistics, while overall unemployment rates went down in February, it rose for Black women. They were the only race and gender group to see a “slight uptick” in unemployment rates, going up to 6.1% in February from 5.8% the previous month. We told you that women have been especially impacted by the pandemic—and Black women are getting hit the hardest. According to one economist, nearly one-third of all Black women in the U.S. labor force work in the healthcare and social services industry, which was “greatly disrupted” by COVID—and as a result, sidelined many female workers.
