reDress Co. is an L.A.-based clothing consignment store making selling used clothes as easy as “renting-a-rack.” Though “rent-a-rack” stores aren’t new (the model has existed in Finland for decades), reDress is one of the more notable resale shops making the process of selling one’s used clothes easy and profitable. Consumers start by renting a clothing rack to display in the reDress store then fill it up with clothes and bags / purses (they can even go in on renting the rack with friends if they need help filling it up). Renters are responsible for pricing their pieces (appropriately, that is) and reDress takes 15% of the profit. From there, the rack lives inside reDress waiting to find a home with a new, sustainably-minded shopper. According to reDress’ founder, around 95% of vendors turn a profit via the shop’s rent-a-rack model, with the average take home sale per rack coming in at just over $500. YPulse’s sustainability research shows 47% of young consumers have bought secondhand clothing / accessories. Services like ThredUp, TheRealReal, and Depop are certainly winning when it comes to their secondhand clothing offerings, and reDress’ “rent-a-rack” model could offer more opportunity for young consumers to not only sell their clothes, but shop recycled ‘fits from their community.
