Epic Games is teaming up with Naomi Osaka and her sister for a collection of digital outfits celebrating their Japanese and Haitian heritage for the Fortnite Icon Series. Fortnite has already partnered with celebrities including LeBron James and Ariana Grande for exclusive skins. Now, they’re collaborating with tennis star Naomi Osaka on a collection of in-game outfits, which were designed by her sister Mari and inspired by their Japanese and Haitian heritage. The outfits launched at the beginning of March and were unveiled during a Twitch stream with YouTuber and gamer Berleezy. According to Osaka, she has always loved gaming and paying homage to her heritage, and creating the collection gave her the opportunity to do both. YPulse’s Metaverse trend research found that the majority of 13-39-year-old BIPOC consumers have purchased clothing / accessories for their avatar—and digital-only clothing is one way brands can reach young consumers by marketing inside video games.
