Snapchat launched a Lens to educate users about British Black History. To commemorate February 11th, the anniversary of when Nelson Mandela was freed from prison 32 years ago, the app partnered with the Black Cultural Archives and Mandela’s granddaughter, Tukwini Mandela, to launch a “Hidden Black Stories” augmented reality project to tell the history of Black people in Britain. Described as an “immersive history lesson,” the Lens and AR experience allows Snapchatters to learn about iconic locations in London including Carnaby Street and Trafalgar Square. The stories shared include Slavery Remembrance, Black History Walks, Nubian Jak Trust, Mary Seacole Trust, and 1000 Great Black Britons, while the AR experiences will allow users to place flags featuring four Black British artists outside the National Gallery. We’ve told you about the many ways Snapchat has grown in the last two years, and brands who want to reach young people are continuing to innovate on the platform. (Adweek)
