She Matters is an app offering resources to Black women who are experiencing postpartum depression.

She Matters is an app offering resources to Black women who are experiencing postpartum depression. While experiencing postpartum depression when her daughter was six months old, Jade Kearney struggled to find a therapist who was trained to help Black women with their mental health. So, she developed She Matters: an app connecting Black women with a community of therapists who have been trained in a 12-week certification program to “understand the very tumultuous relationship that Black women have had in the healthcare system”—180 trained therapists are currently available, with 700 more on the waiting list. More than 7,000 people signed up once She Matters launched to the public in January. Kearney created the app while earning her second master’s degree at NYU and explains: “[I started She Matters] because I felt like I didn’t matter. I had to figure out how to navigate [postpartum depression] alone because between cultural stigma and medical neglect for Black women in the postpartum period, there was really no outlet for me.” YPulse’s mental health data shows parents are more likely than non-parents to be interested in talking one-on-one with someone about their mental health.
