TIME Studios is partnering with Nelvana for a new preschool series about a young Afro Latina girl to increase representation in kids’ content.

TIME Studios is partnering with Nelvana for a new preschool series about a young Afro Latina girl to increase representation in kids’ content. We told you about the new kids’ shows prioritizing diverse and inclusive causes, and the Kids and Family division of TIME Studios is working with Corus-owned Nelvana to develop Leela’s Island, a 3D-animated comedy-adventure preschool series that will be TIME Studios’ first preschool project since it began branching out into kids’ entertainment last year. The show, which was created by Fracaswell Hyman, Perez-Brown, and Janice Burgess, focuses on a five-year-old Afro Latina girl who discovers she can transform into any animal she likes, and uses those out-of-body experiences to solve daily problems from new perspectives. According to Perez-Bown, the show is timely because its theme of a young kid seeing the world from other points of views “addresses the lack of representation in children’s content.” YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research found that 52% of Millennial parents have had their child watch a TV show / movie because it featured an underrepresented group they wanted them to learn more about, while 71% of BIPOC parents say it’s important for kids to grow up in a diverse and inclusive world.
