Little Tikes released a “Peloton-like” exercise bike for kids—but child development experts are questioning the idea. Over the summer, the toymaker announced they would be launching the Pelican, their own version of exercise bikes for kids following the popularity of Peloton bikes with adults during lockdowns. Fisher-Price also launched their own several years ago. However, child development experts say they are “a step backward,” and that kids riding a stationary bike can lose the learning experiences that come with exploring their neighborhoods or being outdoors. They add that active play like biking or tag prepares kids “to succeed in life because they interact with people and build problem solving skills.” However, Little Tikes doesn’t think the Pelican will replace a regular bike, and wanted to incorporate fun exercise into kids’ daily activities and give families “the option for a safe and engaging experience alongside mom and dad’s stationary bike.” Meanwhile, Millennial parents with Pelotons seem to like the idea that their little ones can have their own bike experience while they’re getting a ride in.
