Black woman-led skate collective FroSkate is a safe space for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ skaters. We told you that #SkaterGirls are leading the skateboard revival and a newly formed Chicago-based Black woman-led collective wants to reach more diverse skaters. Founded by Karlie Thorton, the collective started out as a group chat two years ago, among friends who had a passion for skating, but “didn’t see many people who looked like them.” It eventually started hosting free meetups and community events at local skateparks in the city and has grown since then. So far, FroSkate has hosted 14 meetups and over 70 in-person and virtual events since it launched, and their last meetup of the year brought over 50 of the collective’s members. According to Thorton: “You’re able to show up as your best self and be more comfortable to try new things, fall in front of people and mess up when you’re around people who share the same experiences and story as you.” (Black Enterprise)
