Barbie has created a doll based on the European Space Agency’s only female astronaut. In an effort to inspire young girls to pursue STEM and space careers, Barbie has released a doll modeled after Samantha Cristoforetti, the astronaut who is breaking barriers in science as the first European to command the International Space Station next year. Barbie has spent the past few years remaking its image, adding diverse body types, races, and abilities to its line of dolls, as well as honoring female pioneers such as Cristoforetti. This year the brand also created a doll in honor of Astrezeneca vaccine co-creator, Sarah Gilbert. Barbie’s astronaut doll will go on sale across Europe and the U.K. this month.
