After a wave of backlash, Facebook has paused its Instagram Kids project. Kid-friendly versions of social platforms aren’t necessarily new, but when Instagram announced they were working on Instagram Kids intended for 10-12-year-olds, protest was fast and strong, with “44 states and territories urg[ing] Facebook to abandon [the] plans” due to concerns about young peoples’ mental health. Instagram head Adam Mosseri continues to defend the project arguing, “Parents of kids of all ages are looking for more ways to supervise and control their kids’ experiences online,” and that controls being built into the platform would help children and families. Meanwhile, 20% of Millennial parents tell YPulse their kids use Instagram already, so while an Instagram for kids may not be launched, the OG platform is still attracting younger users. (WSJ)
