McDonald’s is promising a future of more sustainable Happy Meal toys. The brand sells over a billion Happy Meals a year in 100 countries, and that produces a lot of plastic. A 2019 petition started by two young sisters that asked the brand to stop giving away plastic toys garnered over half a million signatures, and McDonald’s has been taking steps to become more eco-friendly. Now, they’re promising that Happy Meal toys made from renewable, recycled, or certified materials will roll out by 2025. YPulse’s recent sustainability report shows that 39% of Millennial parents have changed the products they buy because of climate change, and according to the brand’s chief sustainability officer “Our next generation of customers care deeply about protecting the planet and what we can do to help make our business more sustainable.” (Forbes)
