The “exercise dress”—Gen Z and Millennials’ cult-favorite athleisure item—is only getting bigger. Designed as an all-in-one garment made from stretchy fabric with built-in spandex shorts, the exercise dress has quickly become one of young consumers’ favorite athleisure items after the first exercise dress concept was introduced by Outdoor Voices in 2018. The Exercise Dress from Outdoor Voices quickly became the brand’s best-selling item, and three years later the trend continues, with more brands releasing exercise dresses to appeal to young consumers’ love for the dual-purpose item: Halara, Girlfriend Collective, Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, athleisure mainstays Nike and Lululemon, plus more fashion brands have all released their own workout dress iterations. Hong Kong-based activewear brand Halara is one of the most trending exercise dress brands on TikTok after going viral for its “In My Feels” dress—a $49.95 dupe of Outdoor Voices’ version. The pandemic changed how consumers view athleisure, with the exercise dress quickly becoming a cult-favorite due to its versatility, and YPulse’s fashion and style research shows that 83% of young people say comfort is their number one priority in what they wear (not to mention the top fashion trend they’re interested in is activewear).
