TikTok users turned Clinique’s decades-old Black Honey “Almost Lipstick” into a viral sensation.

Aug 31 2021

TikTok users turned Clinique’s decades-old Black Honey “Almost Lipstick” into a viral sensation. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick formula is nothing new—it originally launched in 1989, but recently its Black Honey shade has been blowing up on TikTok thanks to recommendation videos and product demonstrations from users showing how the dark shade turns into a sheer, berry tint that instantly transform anyone’s lips (#Blackhoney currently has 12.6 million views on TikTok). The Black Honey Almost Lipstick is being praised by women with brown skin who are recommending it as one of the best lip colors for people with “two-toned lips or people with browner lips,” and the viral videos have led to content creators naming dupes for the product as its becoming hard to find at some beauty and department stores. Clinique responded to the lipstick’s popularity on social media by reposting user-generated content and sharing an Instagram post featuring Emilia Clarke testing the product IRL for the first time—an example of how brands can engage with viral content by putting their own spin on how young users are interacting with their brand. TikTok is a powerful source of information (and product discovery) for young people, and Clinique’s Black Honey Almost Lipstick is another product experiencing a boom in sales thanks to TikTokers. (Glossy)
