France is telling streaming service giants to invest in local content. Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and other major streaming services will soon have to invest between 20-25% of their French revenues in French content, according to a new decree from the French government. The order is one of the first implementations of the European Commission’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive, a legislation aimed at leveling the playing field between streaming giants and existing players in Europe. Once put into the action, the plan would boost the production of local and independent movies, series, documentaries, and more. While France is the first to act on the legislation, other E.U. countries are expected to follow suit soon. (Variety)
