The teen job market is booming. With restaurants, amusement parks, retail shops, and more businesses experiencing job shortages, teenagers are stepping in. According to data from the U.S. Labor Department, 33.2% of 16-19-year-olds had jobs in May—the highest percentage for the age group since 2008, and a reversal of years of summer jobs for teens trending downward. The wages for teen workers are promising too, with some workers earning $15-$17 per hour for jobs at amusement parks and earning around $20 per hour for jobs at restaurants. One amusement park in Pittsburgh notes that increasing their hourly wages to $15 (along with offering incentives like free food items and complimentary park passes) has helped them recruit more young workers. YPulse asked Gen Z and Millennials at the beginning of the year what their top financial goals are, and finding a job was in the top five list for 13-19-year-olds—something that’s becoming more possible post-pandemic as businesses embrace young workers in the summer and beyond.
