Move over Instagram, TikTok has redefined what it means to be a fashion influencer. Sure, some may have found it “embarrassing” to be on TikTok pre-pandemic when the bulk of its content was dance videos and memes. But now, TikTok is the place for discovering trends, connecting with like-minded communities, and producing unfiltered content. Fashion influencers in particular have found a new home on TikTok where they’re sharing everything from clothing hauls, to trend forecasting, to unfiltered opinions about the Kardashians and Anna Wintour. Fashion influencers are able to bring their niche interests and behind-the-scenes knowledge of the industry to TikTok in engaging ways that aren’t possible through a mere Instagram photo and caption, and as one influencer puts it, “influencer marketing is so saturated that at this point we are using [TikTok] to push us professionally.” TikTok not only provides more opportunity for influencers to work independently, the nature of the platform allows them to create a plethora of content spanning multiple interests and angles.
