Diversity is needed when it comes to character representation in video games.

Jun 11 2021

Diversity is needed when it comes to character representation in video games. In preparation for this year’s E3 gaming conference, participants were asked to build a virtual character that represents their identity. But, many were (rightfully) disappointed by the character creator portal’s lack of customizable options like the inability to change one’s pronouns and a poor selection of diverse hairstyles. One gamer sums up his experience on Twitter: “the E3 portal only has ‘he/him’ pronouns on the notifications system and nothing on the user end to change it — so being misgendered with my hot new announcements is fun.” Representation in video games is an unfortunate and common problem that The Sims and Miitopia have also faced, but it’s more important than ever to ensure players have the power to create characters that fully represent all aspects of their identity. Brands and products that lack diversity are losing young consumers, and the first step for them is to represent all aspects of one’s identity across race/ethnicity, gender, ability, body size, and more.
