Gen Z has their eyes set on entrepreneurship. YPulse’s Life Plans, Rewritten trend research shows that 53% of Gen Z aspires to be an entrepreneur, and 33% say they plan to start their own company someday. Gen Z’s interest in working for themselves is growing, and it’s stemming from their increased skepticism in higher education and corporate institutions. According to a survey from EY Ripples and JA Worldwide, 53% of 14-25-year-olds want to run their own business someday, and 65% who are already in the workforce say the same. With tools and resources available for building websites, launching an online brand, and registering an LLC at the fingertips of these digitally savvy consumers, it’s becoming easier for young people to start their own business compared to previous generations. Watching their parents get laid off during the pandemic is also adding to Gen Z’s doubtful attitude that full-time employment is the only path to financial stability, and working remote during COVID-19 has showed them that there’s more flexibility in work culture now more than ever. While it’s unclear if Gen Z will follow through on their entrepreneurial interests as they continue entering the workforce, it is certain that this generation will be looking for careers that support their creative freedom and independent mindset.
