Gen Z and Millennials are changing the makeup of America, and relocating to smaller cities with booming economies.

Apr 28 2021

Gen Z and Millennials are changing the makeup of America, and relocating to smaller cities with booming economies. While moving to states like New York and California has long been the norm for young people, this landscape is changing as Gen Z and Millennials prioritize affordable housing and cities with recreational and cultural amenities. YPulse’s No Place Like Home trend research found that 67% of young people who live in urban areas want to keep living in cities—but the kind of cities that they live in is shifting. An analysis of U.S. Postal Service change-of-address data for 2020 shows that Americans left big cities for the suburbs and smaller metro areas. As more young people move to cities with lower costs of living and growing economies like Denver and Houston, their political views are also having an impact. The rise of young people in Texas and Colorado—which have histories of being conservative states—is shifting the political landscape to be more liberal as Gen Z and Millennials make their voices heard.
