| Netflix content is more diverse than movie studios’, and they’re committing to help underrepresented communities in the entertainment space. According to research from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which analyzed 126 movies and 180 shows from Netflix’s scripted content between 2018 and 2019, 52% of the streamer’s content had girls or women in starring roles, while 35.7% of all leads came from underrepresented groups, compared to the 28% in the top 100 grossing theatrical films. Meanwhile, 25% of Netflix directors were women in 2018 and 20.7% were in 2019—once again outpacing the feature films from movie studios. To build on that progress, the streamer is upholding their promise to financially support more diverse talent with the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, a $100 million global fund aimed at increasing outreach to underrepresented communities that want to work in the entertainment field. It will be distributed over five years to external organizations and internal initiatives within the company. (NYTimes, WSJ) |
