As privacy concerns grow, downloads of Signal have surged so much it (momentarily) stopped working. As the backlash against Facebook-owned WhatsApp gets bigger, more people are flocking to download encrypted messaging app alternatives like Telegram and Signal. Concerns about WhatsApp’s new privacy policy combined with an Elon Musk endorsement led to Signal becoming the most downloaded app on the App Store and Google Play. While the exact numbers leaving WhatsApp to join Signal are unknown, the “sudden growth” caused widespread outages last Friday as the company struggled to add an “extra server capacity” for new users. WhatsApp has delayed the privacy policy update that triggered the user exodus. (Vox, Mashable)
