YouTube viewers watched 100 billion hours of content in 2020—and the platform is preparing for “global growth.” According to YouTube, the number of hours of content watched this year was double 2018’s viewed hours. (This growth shouldn’t come as a surprise since Gen Z has practically been raised on YouTube.) Smaller creators also thrived this year: More than 80K creators hit 100,000 subscribers, while more than 350 creators have more than 10 million subscribers. Part of their massive growth can be attributed to the platform’s global outreach in Southeast Asia and Latin America as well as the rise of livestreamed esports contests, Twitch, and the mobile game streaming market. They report that more people watched gaming content on the site in 2020 than ever before. (The Washington Post)
