Election-induced stress fueled a surge in edible sales. The pandemic has already impacted young people’s mental health, but the election kicked their anxiety into overdrive. To alleviate the stress, many turned to cannabis-infused gummy bears, cookies, chocolate, and gel capsules. Companies that specialize in edibles reported that sales “soared in the weeks leading up to the election.” According to polls from Gallup, support for marijuana legalization rose from 12% in 1969 to 31% in 2000 and 66% in 2019. Because of the “Election Day sweep,” legal marijuana sales will soon reach one-third of Americans, expanding a market that is already experiencing booming sales during COVID. Pre-pandemic, YPulse’s Cannabis Infusion report found that the majority of 18-36-year-olds believe marijuana should be legalized for medicinal and recreational use. (NYTimes)
