Japanese anime has turned into one of Netflix’s most “bankable” genres. From anime filters on Snapchat to the resurgence in popularity of Avatar: The Last Airbender, young consumers just really love anime—and Netflix is cashing in on it. The streamer just announced that it will be releasing five new Japanese anime series, in addition to the 11 they already had in development. According to Netflix, more than 100 million households around the world chose to watch at least one anime title on their service in the last year, representing growth of 50% compared to last year. Along with Avatar, several other anime titles appeared in their top 10 list in nearly 100 countries. YPulse’s Borderless Culture trend research found that 84% of young consumers agree “It doesn’t matter what country a TV show/movie is from, if it’s good I’ll watch it.” (THR)
