Young fans are urging influencers and celebrities to either support Black Lives Matter online or “stop posting entirely.” As protests continue on, people are calling on popular influencers and celebrities to be more vocal about the #BlackLivesMatter movement on social media, and not post at all if they plan on sharing “off-topic” or self-promotion content. For public figures with a big online following, fans are expecting more than an indifferent attitude about the protests and racial justice issues, reflecting a larger shift in the direction of influencer marketing. YPulse found that 69% of 16-34-year-olds believe brands should be involved in the #BlackLivesMatter movement—and their sentiments about supporting or staying silent could apply to companies as well.
