Teens are calling themselves “ugly” on TikTok—where they’re feeling free to be more real and honest. The app, and all social media, is full of “bafflingly good-looking” people, but more relatable “I’m ugly” videos and posts are also flourishing there, as young people create a community where they can make self-deprecating jokes about their looks. Many of these posts rack up millions of views. Some psychologists praise the pushback against a the pressure for perfection on social media, but note that the trend is also a defense mechanism.
