Teen-repelling sonic devices are being installed in public spaces across the U.S.

Jul 16 2019

Teen-repelling sonic devices are being installed in public spaces across the U.S. The Mosquito emits a high-pitched noise most adults can’t hear, and it’s being installed at parks and recreation centers to stop kids from loitering or vandalizing at night. Philadelphia is about to install 30 more, but residents and politicians are raising concerns. One City Council member says that these “sonic weapons” effectively turn young people away from the safe spaces the city has created for them—and a 17-year-old resident adds that “It makes us feel like animals.” (NPR)
