Gen Z teens want real news, but they’re deluged with fake headlines and not sure how to find the truth. MediaWise is a new Google-sponsored program that’s working to educate them on fact-checking, journalistic standards, and other skills. Demand for the media literacy program is growing fast, as, according to MediaWise’s manager, “When they’re going through their social media feeds, they have no idea how to figure this stuff out and they have no one to ask.” But with the generation raised on social media getting the majority of their news there—and through shows aired on Snapchat, YouTube, and TikTok—it’s vital they learn to discern what’s real.
