Teens are using Google Docs as the new way to pass notes in class. Middle and high schoolers don’t need to take out their phones to chat with their friends (let alone pass physical notes); these days, they talk via shared Google Doc so that, as one 16-year-old explains, “it looks like you’re being productive.” During class and while working on homework, in-document threads and comments let teens talk the talk, and while there is some bullying on the platforms, it’s mostly just idle chatter.
