Malls are filling up empty storefronts with short-term pop ups. Online-only stores like Amazon, Wayfair, and Glossier (which have earned blame for the retail wasteland) have all opened in-person spaces for limited runs. Leasing companies are using the retail trend to their advantage, filling up empty spaces and bringing “'some excitement to some dead wings, or some not-so-well-trafficked wings’” within the malls. Websites have even stepped in as Airbnbs for stores, connecting tenants with vacant spaces. (Bloomberg)
