If canned tuna companies want to stay afloat, they need to reel in Millennials who might not “even own can openers.” Mintel found that 32% of 18-34-year-olds recently purchased a can of fish or shellfish compared to 45% of those 55 and older. Because of their can opener deficiency, companies are upping production of pouches. They’re also trying out trendy flavors (like Sriracha), adding chicken and salmon to their offerings, and creating small brands that sustainably fish to sneak back into young people’s pantries.
