Gizmodo Media Group is creating a standalone ecommerce site, The Inventory. About a quarter of the media company’s 2017 revenue was from commerce, generated mainly via affiliate links in articles on sites like GizmodoJezebel, and Deadspin. The new site will still be editorial, featuring reviews and guides, but will be totally transparent about its advertorial nature. Gizmodo is the latest in a string of publishers that have gotten creative to raise their dipping revenues—take PopSugar’s self-branded makeup line for example. (Digiday)
