Is Instagram ruining the way we view art? Long gone are the days of “No photos please” signs as more museums encourage sharing on social media, rather than deriding it. For the unveiling of Michelle Obama’s official portrait, the Portrait Gallery encouraged everyone to take pictures and hashtag #MyNPG. While galleries stand to garner some free press, people’s attention is diverted from the real-life art to their backlit screen. One 2015 study by Dr. Kylie Budge, however, did find that 90% of Instagram posts from the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney were of the exhibit itself rather than “vanity selfies.” (Quartzy)
