Teen-loved lip-syncing app Musical.ly just sold for up to $1 billion to China’s Bytedance. What does that mean for the future of the app? This merger with the online content company best known for Toutiao (a platform focused on news) gives the app a chance to reach key markets in Asia—though Musical.ly was a fast favorite among young users, last quarter’s user growth was starting to slow. The app will “continue to operate as an independent platform,” but with the added bonus of Bytedance’s AI tech and expanded audience. (Reuters, Music Industry Blog)
