Halloween is tomorrow, and a popular costume for kids has fueled some cultural debate: Is it ok for Caucasian kids to dress up as Polynesian princess Moana?

Halloween is tomorrow, and a popular costume for kids has fueled some cultural debate: Is it ok for Caucasian kids to dress up as Polynesian princess Moana? Some see Moana costumes as cultural appropriation, while others think the PC Police have gone too far in this case. An essay published by a Brooklyn-based mom stirred up the controversy over whether dressing up as Moana “unwittingly tokenizes a whole culture,” as one parent put it. While some find the Polynesian garb “racially insensitive,” others are sticking up for the costume, saying there’s a right way and wrong way to represent a character of a different culture.
