Minecraft took over an unlikely locale last weekend: the Sydney Opera House. Normally a venue for wine-sipping Baby Boomers to watch classical concertos, it was transformed into a video game festival for the avid fandom. Thousands of kids played in video game tournaments, heard from the game’s founders, and had the chance to meet its greatest influencers—all while their parents looked on “with an air of contented bafflement.” If this meeting of “high” and “low” culture proves anything, it’s that The Minecraft Effect has extended its reach into all walks of life.
