Small-town teens are getting degrees, going to big cities—and not coming back. To rural communities’ chagrin, their youth are moving en masse to urban areas, not only leaving holes in the local workforce but widening the gap of educational attainment between small and large population centers. The good news is college education rates are steadily rising, but for small towns to benefit, they’re reaching out to local talent as early as their freshman year of high school to convince them to come home after college.
