A Muppet with autism is the latest addition to Sesame Street’s diverse cast. First presented in a 2015 Digital Storybook as a playmate for Elmo and Abby, Julia will soon be a regular on the series in an “effort to incorporate neurodiversity.” She will be introduced with a “sensitive casualness,” through a scene where she is reluctant to shake Big Bird’s hand to which Elmo explains “sometimes it takes her a little longer to do things.” Julia’s gender is also noteworthy, as research indicates that autism is under-diagnosed in girls.
