Dubbed the most social Olympics yet—thanks to the rise of platforms that weren’t around or as popular during the 2012 games—the Rio Olympics has reportedly been mentioned online over 4.4 million times since the opening ceremony. According to software company Brandwatch, which analyzed the social media activity, Michael Phelps is the most talked about athlete, followed by runner Usain Bolt, and gymnastics and soccer are the most popular sports with 12% of the mentions. (All of which aligns with our own Olympics Special Report findings.) Social media was especially “ablaze” during the opening ceremony, with Team USA’s entrance, the message on global warming and climate change, and overall excitement most fueling the conversation.
