If you want Millennials to get serious, you need to make them laugh. Shows like John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight have resonated strongly with Millennials—most likely because humor helps “shape their identity.” According to a Comedy Central survey, 88% of 18-34-year-olds say comedy is their “#1 form of self-expression,” and 58% will share a link to a funny video to leave an impression on someone. Comedy “has a special ability to garner attention, tear down apathy, and compel engagement around highly politicized issues,” making it an especially useful tool for advocacy groups attempting to reach a young audience.
