Pokémon is 20 years old, and in those decades the brand has continued to do VERY well. The franchise, made up of video games, card games, and also animation, has made over $40 billion dollars since it started, with $2 billion in revenue each year. Pokémon attributes its long-standing success to its gameplay, “which involves collecting, battling and trading,” and encourages communities. Some loyal fans in their 20s and 30s have been with them “since the beginning,” and a new young fan base is now learning how to play. One writer described her daughter’s love for the game: “She sees Pokémon as a world over which she has total control, a place where her perseverance is rewarded.” (The Atlantic)
