In the past year Tidal has been overshadowed by popular streaming services Spotify and Apple Music, but yesterday morning it was at the top of the App Store charts for the first time. Tidal’s exclusive launches of Beyoncé’s Formation, Rihanna’s ANTI, and Kanye’s The Life of Pablo—as well as a Twitter shout-out from Kanye—catapulted downloads for the app. However, some say the boost may not be enough to compete, especially since initial download of the free one-week trial does not mean more paid subscribers. In the meantime, Tidal is expanding and investing in original TV content.
