The mainstreaming of “geek culture” has helped spur the popularity of Imgur: 900 billion images were viewed on the photo sharing social platform in 2015 alone, and the site claims to be the top online destination for Millennial men in the U.S. Imgur attributes its success to creating an environment where users can be anonymous and any user’s photo can be viewed by millions, fostering “authenticity” and “democratic programming.” The site has also been able to conquer ad blockers: one promoted Old Spice post asking users to vote for their favorite GIF actually created requests for more ads.
