It’s a long-standing trope that the cool kids in middle and high school end up in an adulthood slump while the nerdy kids surpass them in success—but there’s now research to back it up. A new study followed “socially precocious cool kids” for a decade and found that these grade school influencers were more likely to be adrift in their 20s, and had a greater rate of alcohol and substance problems.
