A team of teen girls is tackling the problem of teen suicide in the age of social media at this week’s White House Science Fair. The girls developed Safe & Sound, an app to help stop and decrease teen suicides and school shootings by providing quick access to emergency hotlines, tips for dealing with crises, and a journaling feature. The app recently won a $20,000 prize from the Verizon Foundation, which will help them to launch it for free on Google Play. We wrote recently about the social sites and apps that are working hard to provide help and prevent harm, and the issue is clearly top of mind for today’s teens. (NBC)
