What Gen Z calls “funemployment” may not be so fun after all.

Jun 02 2023

What Gen Z calls “funemployment” may not be so fun after all. The Gen Z phenomenon dubbed “funemployment” is essentially being unemployed but playing it off as a conscious choice. Many members of this gen have come to the conclusion that following traditional working norms is unfulfilling, and that they would rather spend their days without a set plan. However, data shows that “funemployment” may not be all it’s cracked up to be: according to a University of Wisconsin-Madison student, “The unemployed experience 30% more negative emotions than the employed. People have an inherent need for structure and purpose.” But the reality is that despite this viral phrase, YPulse’s Finance & Spending Monitor report shows more Gen Z than ever are in the workforce, and of those who are unemployed, the number one reason they are not looking for a job is because they are busy as a student.
