Disney was very close to not releasing Wakanda Forever in French cinemas to put pressure on France’s “windowing” rule. France has long applied a rule called “l’exception culturelle” to protect the art sector from the free market—and that includes cinema too. In practice, the windowing rule is a legal timeframe that dictates when movies shown in cinemas can be released on the small screen. Disney is lobbying for deregulation, so that it can show its own movies on its streaming platform Disney+ without waiting months / years. The streaming market is getting crowded, and many young consumers are experiencing subscription fatigue. So it’s no wonder Disney is exploring ways to reach these gens, such as creating an Amazon Prime-like Disney membership program, or even bypassing the French cinemas if it will get content in front of more eyes faster.
