Politics are directly affecting college students’ love lives. According to NBC’s poll by Generation Lab, college students are less likely to date someone (or even room with someone) who voted differently than them in the 2020 election—and when it comes to marriage, two thirds of rising sophomores said they would never marry someone who voted opposite them (78% for Democrats and 51% for Republicans). This holds true across all income levels and races. YPulse’s Dating and Relationships report data shows almost a third of Gen Z and nearly half of Gen Z females would not date someone whose political views are different than their own.
